Overclock Graphic Cards and Boost Gaming Performance

What is Overclocking

Overclocking is forcing the hardware of your computer to go to higher clock. Hardware in computer such as processor and graphic cards, have a clock that determines their performance, basically if you increase the clock in the hardware it will increase the performance of the hardware too. Here Technozzz will post a guide How to Overclock Graphic Cards and Boost Gaming Performance
Overclocking is not a simple thing, you need to understand the risk of overclocking first. By overclocking it can make your graphic cards overheat, and overheating for a long period will gradually decrease the life span of your graphic cards. So it is wise to consider the risk first before going in to overclocking.

Does it Actually Improve Gaming Performance?

Overclocking will improve the frames rates per second when gaming, but how much? Is it really worth it to take the risk to get higher frames rates per second?
From my experience overclocking will increase the frames rates per second from gaming, for example : I have Arma 3 in my Laptop, yes a laptop, I used to run it on low setting with 30 fps and after I increase the core clock from my Laptop VGA from 645 Mhz to 780 Mhz, I now able to play the game on Medium settings with steady 30 fps. For me Overclocking does improve the gaming performance and it is really useful if you have low budget and unable to buy a replacement for your graphic cards

What You'll Need

  • Nvidia Inspector. Nvidia Inspector is a great overclocking software to overclock your Nvidia graphic cards, sadly this only works with Nvidia Graphic cards and not the AMD one. It can also change the parameter of each game individually.
  • MSI Afterburner. Despite the name, MSI Afterburner works with all graphic cards, not just MSI one, including mobile graphic cards. MSI Afterburner also comes with MSI kombustor which we can use to benchmark our graphic cards.
  • Benchmark software. There are lot of benchmarking software over there, it is not really needed in overclocking but it helps to see the improvement before and after overclocking so I suggest you to keep one in pack

Step 1. Doing visit to the forum

Basically if you do this you won't really need to bother about benchmarking, stress test and any other thing. If you really wanted to skip that step you just need to take your time and go doing some visit to the forum to gather information about your hardware. Like the maximum core clock to overclock it. So it is really good to gather information first about your hardware before going to the overclocking process. Beware though that if you have other laptop model if you use the same laptop, the maximum core clock maybe different even though you have the same graphic card

Step 2. Benchmarking

Overclock Heavens Benchmark

This step is really optional, it will help you to see the improvement before you overclock it and after you overclock it. There are a lot of benchmarking software that you can choose for this. For example 3Dmark 11, Heaven Bencmark, etc. Write down your score before the overclock and after the overclock to see the improvement

Step 3. Getting into Overclocking

Overclock MSI AfterburnerAs I already explained before there are two tools that you can use to overclock your graphic card. Nvidia Inspector or MSI Afterburner. In this tutorial I will choose MSI Afterburner because it works will all kind of cards. So download your MSI Afterburner in the official MSI Afterburner webpage. And after you download and install that, open the software. It will give you some kind of slider where you can adjust your core clock. If you can't move the slider, i.e your default clock is the maximum clock you can follow the guide to unlock maximum overclock MSI Afterburner. Do it gradually and run benchmark after you increase for like 10 Mhz and watch out for any artifact, if there is an artifact I suggest you to lower down the clock.

Final Step. Scream when you see your fps increased

You already overclock your graphic card, you see the improvement of the frames rates. You scream happily knowing that you don't need to waste your precious bucks for just a new graphic card. Congratulations you already overclock your graphic card, just enjoy the improvement in gaming
